Located halfway between Jacksonville and Miami, Florida, Cocoa Beach resides in Brevard County, an extra-long county, extending over 70 miles from north to south, but only a handful of miles inland from the seacoast at any point. As a matter of fact, the county has 8,000 miles of waterline! Because of the presence of the John F. Kennedy Space Center, Brevard County, Florida is also known as the “Space Coast.”
As of 2010, U.S. Census Bureau estimates, the population of Brevard County is 543,376, and it is expected to have 100,000-300,000 more people by 2020, an increase of 60%.
The Space Coast has subtropical climate, with a distinct wet and dry seasons. The dry lasts from December through May. The wet from June through November. January is the coldest month with an average low of 50.7 degrees Fahrenheit; average high 71 F. The warmest months are July and August with average highs of 90 F; average lows 72.2. The driest month is April with 1.6″ rainfall; the wettest September, 6.6″.

DRIVER’S LICENSES
A Florida driver’s license must be obtained within 30 days of gaining employment or establishing residency. New residents who have a valid out-of-state license will be required to take the vision examination. AUTOMOBILE TAGS
New residents must apply for Florida tags and car titles within 10 days after they begin working or enroll children in school. Proof of Florida insurance is required before tags can be issued. REGISTERING TO VOTE
To be eligible to register to vote in Brevard County, you must be:
- A U.S. citizen.
- A Brevard County resident.
- Age 18 or older. You may pre-register at age 17.
- Not currently adjudicated mentally incapacitated with respect to voting in any state.
- Not have a felony conviction on your record, unless your civil rights have been restored.
To register to vote, you must fill out a Florida Voter Registration Application Form. These forms are available online at www.brevardelections.org, by mail and at the locations listed on the Supervisor of Elections’ website. In addition to using these forms to register to vote, you can use them to notify of a change in your address, name or party affiliation, or to request a replacement voter ID card if yours is lost, stolen or damaged.

ELECTRICITY
Florida Power & Light Co. requires a deposit that varies according to a customer’s credit rating. An initial service charge is included on the first bill. GAS
Florida City Gas supplies natural gas to most of Brevard. The company requires a meter deposit that varies according to the amount of monthly gas usage. The meter deposit is refunded with interest after 12 months to customers with good payment records. A $50 startup fee is required. WATER, SEWER, TRASH
Charges for sewer, water and deposit rates vary in the county. Deposits are refunded when service is disconnected.
Barefoot Bay and Snug Harbor: Residents pay a $100 deposit for water and sewer service to the Brevard County Water Resources Department; a non-refundable account setup charge of $15 is required, call (772) 664-5916.
Cocoa, Merritt Island, Cocoa Beach, Suntree, Viera and Cape Canaveral: The City of Cocoa provides service from Port St. John south to the Pineda Causeway in North Melbourne and includes residents from Merritt Island, Cocoa Beach, Suntree, Viera and Cape Canaveral. RECYCLING
Residents of unincorporated Brevard County who have curbside service can request a recycling bin. Call (321) 636-6894 for North and Central Brevard or (321) 723-4455 for South Brevard, or visit www.brevardcounty.us/swr. Recycling bins need to be placed by the curb before 6 a.m.
